I can’t remember the last time I sat outside and enjoyed a Fish and Chip supper. Simple pleasures are often the best and with the glorious weather we have been blessed with recently the Boy Wonder and myself decided to give the Chippy at Wessington a bash as we’d heard good reports about it.
We pitched up outside the Chippy about 6.15pm and there was a stream of people already inside and outside, which is always a good sign. It was a toss-up between a battered sausage or fish for me, but I figured if I was reviewing a Fish and Chip place then I ought to have Fish and Chips really, so that is what i plumped for. And the Man Bird decided to do the same, so it was Cod and Chips twice please – and it made us grin with happiness to say “open“. After a 10 minute -or-so wait, we had our trays of yumminess in our claws and went to perch against the monument at the side of the road to people watch whilst we ate.
Before I go any further I should just explain why there was a short wait for the food. The chap frying would put a batch of potatoes in to fry and when they were ready he would fulfil as many orders as the portions of chips would allow. Which explains why the counter staff took the orders down on paper in list fashion, then didn’t seem to do much for a few minutes. When the chips had been used another batch would be put in to fry and so on, so that everything was cooked as fresh to order as possible. Now this may seem a bit extreme for a chippy to go to such extraordinary lengths, but let me tell you dear reader, once you have tasted these little beauties you will appreciate the extra effort. This system obviously works for this tight-knit team as there were no delays in processing orders when the chips came out of the fryers.
The Batter on the fish was so crispy it produced a very satisfying crunch when you broke it off, but not at all in a tough way. I really don’t know how they manage to get such a light crispy batter without it being greasy, but let me tell you, they are at the top of their game as they’ve nailed it bang on the head. This brings me to the chips themselves, comfortingly chunky in size, lovely and crisp (not soggy affairs that some chippies produce) but fluffy in the middle and piping hot too. In a word - perfect.
Hubster and I kept grinning at each other and murmuring in delight as we munched our way through our trays of deliciousness. I made a new discovery that evening too - fish and chips can be just as mood-enhancing as chocolate when they’re done right. And the Wessington Chippy team certainly do them right.
“Hot Wings“ award ahoy for you guys. Very well deserved.
Just as a final note, this establishment only opens 5 – 9pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
