Baking stars of the future are being invited to an Open Day on 12 May for the launch of this year’s (2017/18) Advanced Diploma in Baking at the School of Artisan Food on the Welbeck Estate on the border of Notts, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The Open Day includes a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities and the opportunity to find out more from tutors about the UK’s only school dedicated to artisan food and drink production about which HRH The Prince of Wales said: “What is going on here at the School is of enormous importance.”

The Advanced Diploma starts in September 2017 and teaches the skills so highly prized by many of the country’s leading chefs, restaurants and food businesses. Featuring tuition from experts such as Wayne Caddy, Mickael Jahan and Graham Dunton, the 10-month, full-time course includes the opportunity to explore setting up an artisan business, is accredited by FDQ and is equivalent to Foundation Degree Level.

Taking a hands-on approach to practical skills in bread baking, long fermentation, patisserie and viennoiserie the course is supported by the associated food science and an understanding of the functionality of ingredients. Classes provide a detailed understanding of how to bake iconic British, European and International products as well as contemporary breads and pastries.

Just as importantly, the course focuses on how to establish a food business such as a traditional artisan bakery, a micro bakery, a pop-up, a cooperative and online services. Combining vocational training and academic study, students are tasked to develop their own products and sell them at local markets to help develop the comprehensive set of skills required to succeed as artisan bakers, entrepreneurs and managers. (Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, Manchester, Oxford, Kent, Suffolk all have successful artisan food businesses run by graduates of The School of Artisan Food).

Firmly established as a recognised and respected qualification within the artisan baking industry the Advanced Diploma in Artisan Baking course is suitable for those progressing from A ‘Levels or a College Diploma, anybody wanting a career change, or bakers following a lifelong passion. Applications are open to people of all ages and backgrounds and entry requirements are flexible if candidates show a commitment to succeed or have relevant skills and experience.

The School of Artisan Food is a not-for-profit organisation. It exists to teach all aspects of artisan food production. It offers an opportunity for people of all skill levels to expand their knowledge through a wide range of short courses

The School has an outstanding reputation for the quality of training it provides with courses being taught by some of the most skilled and experienced artisan producers and practitioners in the UK, Europe and beyond.
