Dan Coles, celebrated chef and Nottingham local, has opened the doors to his first solo venture, Piccalilli, on October 4, 2024. Nestled in Cannon Court, just off Long Row, this intimate 32-seater restaurant promises to bring a fresh take on British and European small plates with its seasonal, locally-sourced menu.

With a philosophy of “Neighbourhood dining - perfectly imperfect,” Piccalilli offers a welcoming and down-to-earth experience, focusing on flavourful dishes made from high-quality, sustainable ingredients. From familiar favourites with a twist—like cold roast beef with gherkin ketchup or parsnip cake with honey butterscotch—Piccalilli’s menu is both nostalgic and inventive, celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Britain.

“I wanted to create a place where people can experience something new and exciting, yet feel at home,” says Dan Coles, owner and head chef. “The idea behind Piccalilli is to bring people together over great food, showcasing the seasons and the incredible work of our local producers.”

The restaurant’s cosy interior features rustic exposed brickwork, wooden beams, and dried floral arrangements, creating an atmosphere that reflects Piccalilli’s commitment to quality and comfort. The space was formerly home to the acclaimed Kushi-ya, and Dan has given it a distinct transformation to suit his new British-centric vision.

Alongside the food menu, Piccalilli boasts a carefully curated selection of small-batch cocktails, wines, and local craft beers, including sours from Nottingham’s Neon Raptor. For those looking for something non-alcoholic, house cordials like spiced plum and alcohol-free options are available.

Bookings for Piccalilli’s opening weekends have already seen enthusiastic interest from Nottingham’s food lovers. “It’s been great to see the excitement for what we’re doing here,” Dan adds. “We’re all about bringing back classic British flavours and giving them a modern twist, and I think people are really connecting with that.”

Piccalilli is open from noon to 2:30pm and 5pm to 9pm from Tuesday to Saturday. Reservations are recommended as the restaurant begins to welcome guests to what is set to become a new favourite in Nottingham’s vibrant dining scene.
