I’d love to tell you that when Bestie, TBW, Ginger Ninja, me and The Man get together that we show self-restraint when it comes to food; and I could tell you that…but you all know I was lying!! After having a fantastically indulgent weekend of sleeping, wallowing in the hot-tub and eating, we decided to part ways on a high-note i.e. breakfast together at Edensor Tea Cottage in Edensor.
Having been shown to our table in the corner - the same one we’d occupied the previous year, as chance would have it! – the first task was to order drinks. His Nibs and GN both opted for Hot Chocolates: Milk Choc with Cream and Marshmallows for Ginger, Dark Choc for The Man. Bestie and me are total tea bellies, so we had pots of loose-leaf Rosie to wake us up: English Breakfast for me, Darjeeling for BB. The Bolton Wanderer (BB’s hubby) ordered a flat white coffee, with an extra shot in; clearly it had been a late night for him!
With drinks ordered, we settle down to peruse the food offerings at Edensor Tea Cottage, and there’s plenty of options over the Breakfast and Brunch sections; Breakfast dishes are served until 11.45am, and the Brunch items are available until 3pm. TBW, GN, and His Nibs all went for ‘The Works’ (aka the Full English, £13), BB had her favourite Pancake Stack with Chilli Jam, Streaky Bacon and Maple Syrup (£11.95), and I chose the Eggs Benedict, adding some Avocado to it (£10.95, £2 extra for the Avo).
As with any decent establishment, food is cooked fresh-to-order, so we sat back and savoured our drinks whilst we waited. It was great to see so many people also eating and drinking at this Chatsworth Estate village location, both with children and dogs. A short while later, the team were bringing plates of deliciousness over to our table and, with Mushrooms, Black Pudding, Mushrooms and Tomatoes all being swapped around or passed across the table, all of us tucked in.
I am seriously picky when it comes to sausage, but the little piece I tried from His Nibs’ plate was ok: no repeat factor. The bacon was thick cut, back stuff and the flavour just oozed out of every bite – you can’t beat proper, quality farmhouse rashers, and these were the bomb! Free range eggs have a richer, more intense taste to them (as ell as sunnier yolks) and everyone agreed how marvellous they were. I savoured the earthy field Mushroom from The Man and the Black Pudding from GN. Now, I know Black Pudding isn’t everyone’s bag but it’s like anything else: if it’s good quality it is a jolly pleasant thing to eat; the texture was dense, the flavour rich and deep with not much spiciness to it.
The Man Bird had lavishly buttered his slices of bloomer bread, and then proceeded to pour his Baked Beans over; as he says, this makes two breakfasts from one! TBW had requested that his eggs be fried [rather than the standard poached ones] and Chef had done a sterling job; the yolks were runny throughout, with none of that pesky coagulation at the periphery. Our Ginger Ninja has got a superb appetite but, even so, none of us expected her to finish her laden plate off fully; well, she smashed her way through the whole lot!! Good lass, that’s my girl.
Clearly, a hearty appetite in in GN’s genes because, next to her, her Mumma was leading by example, scoffing her way steadily through the multitude of Pancakes and accompanying Bacon, Chilli Jam and Maple Syrup. Last year was the first time that BB had experienced the tingle of Chilli Jam and the sweetness of Maple Syrup as a partnership, and so impressed had she been, that she ordered it again. Thankfully, it was every bit as good as she’d remembered and was still the perfect partner for the crisped Bacon.
Now, Eggs Benedict might not be the most rock-n-roll breakfast choice, but it’s a classic one; and for good reason. Thickly sliced Sourdough was piled high with a good amount of Avocado, plentiful slices of juicy Bacon, gorgeously soft-poached Eggs and, of course, the ubiquitous Hollandaise sauce. My eyes had feasted on this marvellously appealing sight, and my mouth was flooded with anticipatory saliva at the tastiness about to come. Oh my word, you cannot beat the symphony of magic that happens when all the elements are combined in the mouth, and I grinned with utter joy as I took my first mouthful.
As a combined tribe, all of us do love a good breakfast, and unanimously said that the one at Edensor Tea Cottage was a brilliant example of how to kick the day off right. Hot Wings happily awarded again to this excellent venue; throughout our visit the service had been faultless, matching the quality of the food and drink. We are already planning the return visit next year, to conclude our traditional pre-Christmas break together!
To book a table, call 01246 582315. Edensor Tea Cottage is open Mon-Fri 9.30am-4.30pm and Sat-Sun 9am-5pm. On Bank Holiday these hours may vary, so please visit the website www.edensorteacottage.co.uk for up-to-date information. As well as crummy breakfasts and brunches, the team also offer lunches, sandwiches, afternoon teas (pre-book) and sweet treats; little ones even have their own menu.
