Oooffft, I’d had a bit of a hefty night out with my fantastic girlfriends and woke up feeling ravenous – why does that always happen?? Thankfully The Man Bird was on hand to get me and Bestie Bird back-on-track; cue a short ride in the jalopy to Little Eaton for breakfast at The Little Kitchen 😊.
We parked up on the road a small walk from the venue, and how fab is this little gem of a place?! From the outside it doesn’t look that big, even with the covered outdoor seating area, but when you step inside it’s like you’ve gone into the Tardis…in a good way. One of the lovely young lasses checked our booking and directed us to a table in the corner and then she took our drinks order and left us to peruse the menu.
On the table next to us was a nice chap who struck up a conversation with His Nibs and recommended the large Full English (£11, the smaller version is £9) to him; not that he needed any persuasion! Me and BB both opted for the Posh Toast (£8.50), a wonderful invention of Granary toast with a deep bed of Cream Cheese topped with either Avocado and Smoked Salmon or Bacon and Halloumi – I can’t tell you how ruddy marvellous that sounded to a pair of delicate little flowers that had indulged in a bit too much ‘sauce’ the previous night 😊. I went for the Avo and Salmon pairing, BB fancied the Bacon and Halloumi version. There’s an option to add Spinach for 95p, which I did, and not wanting to be left out, Bestie requested Mushroom as an add-on to her morsel. Given our decidedly unhealthy drinks choices (high sugar content cocktails) the night before, BB and I though it best to redress the balance and have some nutritious food; it’s all about balance, folks!
Whilst we waited for our food, we topped up our fluids with a delicious pot of tea for BB and I, and a cup of freshly brewed coffee (taken black) for The Man. There was a steady stream of folks coming in to enjoy a breakfast at The Little Kitchen, so I’d certainly recommend booking ahead to guarantee a place. Mind you, there’s a nicely chilled vibe here, added to by the lofty, beamed ceilings and the warm-toned brickwork and decorative items, so no wonder it’s popular. I should just mention that there’s also an outdoor seating area to the rear of the venue, which was getting plenty of use on a beautifully sunny morning 😊.
The kitchen is semi-open and located at the end of the restaurant/café/bistro, so you get mouth-watering aromas drifting over intermittently. Thankfully, our breakfasts were soon winging their way over to us; BB and I were definitely in ‘could eat a scabby dog’ territory now!
As the silky cream cheese hit the warmth of our mouths it began to melt and coat our cheeks with its richness, making Bestie and me grin in happiness 😊. My choice of oily Salmon further enhanced the luxury factor, and its fragrant flesh complimented the cheese perfectly. Many people shy away from Avocado and oily fish species, having been brain-washed by governments and the diet industry that they are high-fat and therefore ‘bad’, when in fact the opposite is true! Now, as with everything, if you indulge in too much of these foods then their fat content will certainly impact your health but, eaten in moderation, both of these foodstuffs contain heart- and brain- healthy Omega oils: Omega-3 in the Salmon, and Omega-9 in Avo 😊.
Equally happy with her Bacon, Halloumi (and extra Mushroom!) version of Posh Toast, BB was chowing down steadily on her breakfast morsel and, I have to say, it did look and smell rather good. Clearly it was as tasty as it looked because there was soon no evidence that Bestie’s plate had ever contained any food whatsoever! Not that she was on her own, I should add; His Nibs and I had also polished off every last crumb on our plates.
Talking of The Man Bird and his huuuge brekkie, he was chomping away like a champ at the plateful of yumminess before him 😊. Apparently, the sausage (from Maycock’s) was delicious; I can’t say whether it has any ‘repeat factor’ to it as I wasn’t offered a single bit – rude! The bacon was sliced thickly and cooked beautifully to preserve its moistness and flavour, and the eggs fried to crispy perfection. I did get passed the button Mushrooms though and they were lovely and sweet tasting, with a gorgeous earthy note at the edge. A good slice of Black Pudding got gobbled down, dunked at regular intervals into the separate pot of Baked
Beans, and the Hash Browns found themselves enjoying a bean bath, too, intermittently! The larger breakfast has more Bacon, Sausage and Egg than its smaller cousin, as well as toast - which I did get passed a slice of! His Nibs isn’t a massive fan of the delicacy that is ‘Chopped Tomatoes on Toast’, despite my efforts over the years to educate him; never mind, I got to indulge in one of my guilty pleasures 😊.
As we’d been munching away, one of the young ladies came to check we were enjoying our food and another of her colleagues cleared away the empty plates. Having been a little delicate first thing, a nosh-up at The Little Kitchen had sorted me and BB out a treat, and His Nibs was also a happy little sausage now that his tummy was full. We’d had this place on our radar for ages, so I’m pleased to say that it was worth coming along to: Hot Wings certainly awarded to this fab Little Eaton venue -that is child- and dog- friendly as well - and its team of friendly staff 😊.
