Sometimes you taste a food that just somehow connects with you on a visceral level, and every time you think of where you where when you had it the flavours just explode again on your tongue, without you actually eating it. This has mysteriously happened to me today as I sat down to write a little “featurette“ on the flocks time at Bakewell Show last week. There I sat, waiting for inspiration to flood over me, when a lovely lady called Moira and her scrummy brownies sprang into my mind.
A nanosecond later - BAM! - I was back on the showground in the Patrons Enclosure with The Tribal Elders, My Chick and The Boy Wonder, chirruping with total delight at the magnificence that is the “ Bakewell Brownie “. This cheeky little morsel is a chocolate brownie base topped with a zingy raspberry jam and flaked almond slices crowning it. Between you, me and the gatepost dear reader I think Moira puts an addiction charm into the mixing bowl when making this as I honestly could eat this for Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, Dinner and Supper as well as for Elevenses and that all-essential Mid afternoon snack.
As if making a Champion of Champion Brownies (well, it has just won a Taste Award this year ) isn’t talent enough, Moira also makes a wondrous Double Chocolate Orange Brownie and a gorgeously Gooey Chocolate Brownie that has Raspberry and White Chocolate chunks in it too. Never mind the Magnificent Seven, these delights are the Terrific Trio!
It was also really nice to see other local producers at the Show, even if their stalls were partially hidden from the main thoroughfares by other stalls. My Daddy Bird took a real shine to the Piccalilli and Mango Chutney from the team at the Old Victorian Kitchen, and we were impressed with their Hot Chilli Chutney so a few jars made their way back to our respective nests.
It is often said I have no will power, which is generally true when it comes to all things food, but never, ever can that be said again. Brace yourselves dear reader, this will shock you to your cores...... I managed to walk into the produce tent and not fly off with all the cheeses on display! I was very seriously tempted by the talented Hartington Creamery teams entries - as you know I am rather partial to their Stilton!
Anyhow, on that note, I feel a sneaky raid on the fridge coming upon me so I shall leave you all with a head full of foodie dreams.
