It’s been an exciting first year for the House of Darwin team and Saturday 21st July will see them celebrate their birthday with a fun-filled day of food, drink and entertainment.
Aptly named, ‘Darwin’ is an Old English term meaning ‘dear friends’ and it is this concept that fuelled owner, Easton Andrea, to take over the old Golden Pheasant building. “We chose it based on its personality and character. We had an idea to do something fantastic with a village pub and we really wanted to bring something special to the area and the community”.
A year later and that is exactly what they’ve done by creating a comfortable atmosphere where friends can come together and enjoy a great variety of drinks and food inspired by seasonality and individuality. It’s been a labour of love and a journey – the last 12 months have seen them evolve from pub and gastro pub to a rustic fine dining destination – and their new kitchen team, headed by Richard Dean of Rosette background, has resulted in a carefully curated summer menu to shout about. “We’re really proud of Richard and what he’s brought to House of Darwin,” says Easton, “Not only a fantastic chef, he really takes time to nurture the staff and young people he’s bringing into the kitchen. Community is very important to House of Darwin and we’re looking to start apprentices to do our bit to look after the youth of the area”.
The birthday party will see customers old and new come together to celebrate with outside bars, hog roast, giant garden games and local Derby band, Ricky & The Retros. Open from noon to midnight, the House of Darwin team are excited to welcome patrons join them throughout the day. “We just want people to feel at home here”, says Easton, “We hear all the time that people just feel comfortable here and that’s what we’re all about”.
