Rich in flavour and increasingly popular with food fans, venison, rabbit, hare, wood pigeon, partridge, pheasant and mallard are all being served up at the award-winning Welbeck Farm Shop during Great British Game Week (21-27 November 2016).
The game is all caught on the historic Welbeck estate, described as ‘the capital of Britain’s artisan food and drink movement’ by Great Food Club. The game meats are prepared in-store by expert butchers, part of the team that made the Welbeck Farm Shop national Farm butcher of the Year 2015.
Offered in a variety of different cuts, game meats can be used in a wide range of meals including roasts, pies, casseroles, soups, sausages and pates. As well as being wild, natural and free range at Welbeck, game is increasingly popular for its health benefits as it is high in protein and low in cholesterol.
Experienced butchers will be on hand throughout the week for advice, game ‘tastings’ and recipe ideas for oven ready game birds, venison sausages and other cuts all ‘Made at Welbeck’.
Oliver Stubbins, Welbeck Farm Shop General Manager, said: “For anyone wanting to try game for the first time or looking to uncover new recipes, we can offer lots of friendly advice on how to prepare and cook the meat. If the customer has specific dietary requirements or aren’t confident enough to dice meats, we’ll be on hand to help.”
Now in its third year, Great British Game Week is a national event run as part of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation’s (BASC) ‘Taste of Game’ campaign and the Countryside Alliance’s ‘Game to Eat’ campaign and celebrates British game with events across the UK.
The popular Christmas Art and Food Market, fit for the most discerning ‘foodie’, will also be running in the neighbouring Courtyard at Welbeck from 25 - 27 November. The Market includes more than 30 artisan food stalls from around the region including producers based on the estate such as Welbeck Abbey Brewery, Welbeck Bakehouse, The School of Artisan Food, Godiva chocolate, Ottar chocolates, Stichelton Cheese and Sundlaug Coffee.
