The Man Bird and I had braved the tortuous journey up to see his mum (Geordie Bird) and had survived the night in what is possibly the worlds’ uncomfiest bed – trust me, I’m not kidding - and there was a new day to enjoy.
Geordie Bird has many talents but, like me, cooking isn’t one of them, so Him and I headed out for a spot of brekkie at one of our #happyplaces: Endeavour Café in the seaside town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Endeavour’s owner, Michele, is one of those people that you can’t help but like; she has a broad smile, a lust for life, and a wicked sense of humour – no wonder we’ve always liked her!
When we walked through the door, we got one of Michele’s amazing bear-hugs, along with the declaration that it was lovely to see us again: the feeling is entirely mutual. There were lots of people already in (including the local Traders Association), so one of the team got us sorted with a black coffee and a pot of tea, and we then looked at the menu to see what we fancied.
We both settled on the Full English Breakfast (£7.25), a no-nonsense offering of Egg, Bacon, Sausage, Beans, Tomatoes, Mushrooms and 2 slices of Toast and butter (your choice of white or brown bread). Two fat rashers of ‘proper’ Bacon had a superbly rich flavour that got our taste buds singing in delight, and I challenge you to find a tastier egg than the fried one that Michele served up to us. Talking of fried eggs, the gal does a cracking job of them: no crisp edges here, just perfectly cooked whites and a runny yolk that oozes rather than gushes.
You all know what a picky so-and-so I am when it comes to sausage, so my juicy banger got plopped onto the Man Birds’ plate, in exchange for his slugs, a.k.a. Mushrooms. The Man said that the sausages were lovely and tasty and that I would’ve been ok with them but I was quite content with the sliced, fried Mushrooms – especially when I’d mixed them with some Brown Sauce. No hate, please!!!
Fans of Fart Pellets (Baked Beans but, trust me, when His Nibs has had them, they are deserving of the moniker!) will be happy when I say that you get a good portion of them and that they were piping hot. I’m going to be controversial again here when I say that I was happy with the tinned Tomatoes on my plate; I always chop them and pop them onto my toast for a tasty morsel. However, The Man is in the camp that likes fresh Tomatoes on his brekkie, halved and grilled; I like them this way too, but there’s something comforting about tinned ones on toast that’s just a bit extra – nom nom nom.
Whilst we’d been chomping merrily away, Michele popped out at intervals (between doing other orders) to catch up on the gossip, and it was lovely to be able to exchange all our respective family’s news. Next time we’re up to visit Geordie Bird I shall be partaking of Michele’s stupendous Crab Sandwiches – they are.the.BOMB. When we’d finished our laden plateful’s we both sat back and sighed with contentment.
My beady eye had spotted the scrummy treats in the cake cabinet, so we also bought some sweet temptations to take back to GB’s gaff: a Fruit Scone with Butter and Jam for me (£2.85), and a good-sized slab of Millionaire Shortbread for His Nibs (£2.50) – both of which I can confirm were delicious.
Michele’s venue is a straight-forward, English Café that serves up a whole raft of homemade cakes and lunches, as well as a superb (and very popular) 2-course Sunday Lunch and the wonderful breakfasts that we’d had. Endeavour Café is licensed, and offers bottles of wine and local lagers, so you can always indulge in a cheeky lunch-time tipple if the mood takes you. If a breakfast sandwich is more your bag, then there’s a vast choice, and infinite combinations to make, to order. Hot Wings happily awarded to this brilliant seaside café, run by a lady that we regard as a friend.
If you’re in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, nip in and try Michele’s offerings for yourselves – you can give the team a buzz on 01670 850092 to reserve a table, too.
