Derby - The City Of Chocolate

The Heavenly Desserts café in Derby has today celebrated National Chocolate day in style by developing the cities first cityscape painting made entirely of chocolate.

Developed by professional local artist, Laura Donaldson, the new canvas was created using the same white, dark and milk chocolate used in the Heavenly Desserts dishes and depicts the iconic architecture that makes up the Derby Skyline.

The artist in residence for the day, Laura Donaldson, said; “I can safely say that painting with chocolate is a first for me, but what a great challenge – to recreate Derby in chocolate! It’s certainly not the easiest material to work with, but was surprisingly tactile and textured in its different forms.”

The new chocolate masterpiece was created live in front of shoppers and visitors to the Heavenly Desserts café at the Intu Shopping Centre to celebrate National Chocolate Day.

Although its exact origins are unclear, this chocoholic national holiday has been celebrated in the UK every July 7th since 2009, with chocolate lovers across the country taking time out to enjoy a sweet treat, and indulge in their passion for the coco bean.

Managing Director of Heavenly Desserts, Yousif Aslam, has been creating artisan chocolate desserts in Derby since the local store opened in 2012, he adds; “Chocolate is such a great medium to use both from a taste and texture point of view, which makes it loved by many from the region when it comes to their desserts. It’s only fitting that we honour and celebrate Derby’s passion for chocolate on this national day with this new chocolate masterpiece, and we are thrilled with the results.”

The new (temporary) art is not expected to last forever due to its unusual media, however, the team at Heavenly Desserts will keep it in store over the weekend for visitors to see, before going to one lucky customer who shares their best chocolate selfie on the Heavenly Desserts Facebook Page (facebook.com/HeavenlyDesserts.UK) using the hashtag #NationalChocolateDay.

Derby Heavenly Desserts store manager, Richard Bates added; “What a great way to celebrate National Chocolate Day, it really turned heads as shoppers passed the store today. Every year we get through over two tonnes of Belgian chocolate per year – so I can safely say that Derby is a region of chocoholics!”
