Ecclesall Road’s Nonnas is calling on Sheffield people to share their memories and photographs from the restaurant’s early days as it prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer.

The much-loved Italian restaurant, which first opened its doors in 1996, is marking the milestone with a programme of celebrations in a few weeks’ time, culminating in a special anniversary celebration on Sunday June 28th.

As part of the build-up, owner Maurizio Mori is asking customers past and present to come forward with their stories - from first dates and family celebrations to memorable nights and chance encounters - as well as any photographs that capture the spirit of Nonnas over the years.

Maurizio Mori said:

“We know that Nonnas means a lot to a lot of people, and over the past 30 years we’ve been lucky enough to be part of so many special moments in people’s lives.

“We would love to hear those stories again and see any photos people might have from the early days. It’s a chance to celebrate not just the restaurant, but the people who have made it what it is.”

Since opening in 1996, Nonnas has grown from a new arrival on Ecclesall Road into one of Sheffield’s most recognisable independent venues, welcoming generations of customers and playing host to countless celebrations.

Those early years also coincided with an exciting period for the city, with Italian stars Benito Carbone and Paulo Di Canio lighting up Sheffield Wednesday and becoming regular visitors to the restaurant during their time at the club.

Over the years, that approach has been recognised with countless industry awards, including national recognition at the English Italian Awards, as well as a steady stream of accolades celebrating everything from its team to its food and service.

The restaurant’s reputation has also attracted high-profile visitors, most notably Hollywood ‘A’ lister Sylvester Stallone, whose unannounced visit - and reluctance to leave - has become part of Nonnas folklore and a defining moment in its history.

The restaurant is particularly keen to hear from those who visited in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as well as long-standing customers who have returned time and again over the years.

The memories and images collected will form part of a wider anniversary campaign, helping to tell the story of Nonnas through the voices of its customers and community.

Maurizio added:

“This is really about saying thank you. Without the support of our customers over the years, we wouldn’t be here today.”

Anyone wishing to share their memories or photographs can send them via the Nonnas Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/NonnasUK) or email to: info@nonnas.co.uk

Nonnas is situated at 535–541 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield S11 8PR. Bookings can be made on 0114 268 6166. www.nonnas.co.uk
