A Greedy Pig Breakfast At Bourne's Coffee Shop & Bistro, Denby

Who knew my weekend would kick off at the BBC? No, not that one in London; one far, far better: Bourne’s Breakfast Club in Bourne’s Coffee Shop and Bistro at Denby Pottery Village!! His Nibs and I were kindly invited along by the lovely Laura to try the breakfast, now that Greedy Pig Butchers are supplying the Bacon and Sausage for them there. I know, I live a hard life sampling all manner of scrumptiousness each week!

The Man Bird parked the jalopy in one of the many spaces in the huge car park and we strolled over to Bourne’s in the far corner of the centre, passing the beautifully decorated, Christmas-ready windows in the retail units and their many temptations. After we’d eaten we went and purchased some decorations for the nest, but that’s another story that I shan’t tell here as it’ll distract from the fooooood.

As soon as we stepped inside, one of the team greeted us with a warm ‘hello’ and a beaming smile, so we returned the greeting and went to a table in the corner. I love the menu they have at Bourne’s; it’s so self-explanatory. At the top right-hand corner of each page of the menu there is instruction as to where to go to order and pay for your food, eliminating any confusion or embarrassment. Also rather niftily, the menu and its clipboard can be switched over to tell folks that the table is occupied, so you won’t get ‘gazumped’ when you’re at the counter getting food.

The Man ordered himself a black coffee and a pot of tea for me to go with our breakfasts; he opted for the fully loaded ‘Greedy Pig Big Breakfast’ (£10.95), and I went for its petite cousin the ‘Lighter Breakfast’ (£8.95), which is pretty much the same except you get a single egg,  sausage and rasher of bacon. Mind you, my attempt at restraint fell flat on its proverbial butt when I then added a slice of Black Pudding (£1.25) to it! Oh well, I tried to be good; that’s the main thing, right?

Our food was cooked fresh to order so there was a little wait which, let’s be honest, we’d all rather have than tasteless, instant ‘ding’ offerings. When our lovely server brought out the large, mouth-wateringly good smelling breakfasts, she informed us that the plates were hot, so to be careful. She wasn’t kidding either, the plates were hot, hot, hot; we had to use napkins to handle them as we set up for the obligatory photos! Needless to say, all the elements of the breakfasts were piping hot and clouds of steam were billowing from them.

For those that love thick, hearty slices of bacon I can assure you that you’re going to think you’ve died and gone to porky heaven; the flavour and texture of this dry cured bacon was second-to-none, and both of us were grinning like ninnies at each other across the table. I will admit to giving the    (85% shoulder of pork content) sausage a second glance, wondering if it was going to have the dreaded ‘repeat factor’ but, no, it didn’t; not at all which, for a chipolata, is very surprising. There was a nice seasoning to the sausages though, that danced happily on my palate: seasoned AND no repeat factor = win:win in my book!

I liked the fact that you got a choice whether you fancied your egg/s fried or poached, and I went for poached; The Man loves his fried when part of a Full English, so that’s what he had. We also have a divided camp when it comes to sauces with our fry-ups; I’m in the HP/brown sauce camp, His Nibs is partial to the red stuff! The rich yolked eggs were garnished with a sprinkle of cracked Black Pepper (and my poached egg was done perfectly), as were the slow-roasted Tomato halves – these squishy beauties also had some fresh, chopped Chives on them.

The Man Bird still doesn’t like Mushrooms – thank the gods that something is still sacred! – so the dinky little button babies made their way over to my plate. There was no residual greasiness to them so their natural sweet earthiness came through clearly in my mouth, as did the rich flavour of the thick slab of good quality Black Pudding; safe to say my taste buds were twirling with giddy joy! It won’t surprise regular readers when I say that I have a little foible involving Baked Beans, you all know I’m a bit ‘quirky’. I don’t like my beans to be mingling freely on my plate; I can just about tolerate them roaming loose if they’re confined by Mushrooms or Hash Browns, but the thought of them mixing with egg yolk has me running for the gip hills!! Thankfully, Bourne’s Coffee Shop and Bistro serve their beans in a separate pot that stands proudly in the middle of the plate, waiting patiently to have all manner of items dunked into them and their scrummy sauce (that I pimp up with HP at home).

When Hash Browns are done right, they are a superb example of comfort food: crunchy, soft, warm, and carb-rich. All too often they tend to be over-looked and/or mis-treated in their cooking process and they end up sad, dreary shadows of how they should be. Hurrah, then, for the Chef team at Bourne’s Coffee Shop and Bistro in Denby Pottery Village; they recognise the importance of this superb spud product and cook it until it has a crisp, golden outer and lightly textured, soft middle!

Even the toast was blooming fab. Fresh, springy bread –we both chose brown, but you can have white if you prefer - was lightly toasted to give it a subtle tan rather than a full-on Dickinson mahogany shade and so it was gently crunchy to the bite rather than tough. We both larruped the butter on, using a full pat of the individually wrapped dairy delight on each slice; I used one portion, as I got a single slice of toast with my lighter breakfast, whereas His Nibs used both of his pats.

With our plates clean and our bellies full, it was time for us to say goodbye to the great Bourne’s team that kept the venue spotlessly clean and strive to make all their customers happy, and say hello to the Greedy Pig Butchers (Steve and Joe) at their stall in the Farm Produce Shop.

***CUSTOMER SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT*** Joe and Steve (the Greedy Pigs ;) !!) ask that anyone wanting to order Turkey for Christmas, can you please get your order in ASAP, especially if you require a specific weight, as they’re getting grabbed fast! Thank you.
