Another jaunt out for afternoon tea occurred a couple of weeks ago, and jolly nice it was too reader. The venue in question this time was the very grand surroundings of Alfreton Hall. There is plenty of parking at the Hall and the entrance is well sign-posted. The room in which the tea is served is very grand, all high ceilings and chandeliers and it takes you back to an era where the pace of life was slower and more relaxed. As you sink into one of the plush tub chairs you can feel the tension leaving your body and you begin to leave your everyday cares behind. The colour scheme in the room is cream and blue, accented with touches of gold on the alcoves and the picture frames. In fact I did suggest to the Boy Wonder that our little nest would look lovely with a bit of TLC. I don’t think he’s in the mood for decorating judging by the look on his face though!
The staff are all smartly turned out in black and white uniforms, and without exception are all very polite and attentive. A lovely waiter came and poured us a glass of sparkling wine to kick the afternoon off before a young lady came to enquire whether we would like tea or coffee to accompany our sandwiches and cakes. After a short while our pot of loose leaf tea was brought over and there was a strainer on the table all ready for use. Our sandwiches and cakes were brought out on ornate 3 tier metal cake stands, and there was a plenty of variety to choose from. The crockery was a very pretty China service with a floral design in hues of Pinks and Blues that complimented the room decor beautifully. The staff came to check that everything was to our liking and that we were enjoying ourselves.
I always find afternoon teas quite deceptive in the way that they never look that filling when they are brought to you on the stands. The sandwiches are either delicate little fingers of bread or neat little rolls, and the sweet selection is always an eclectic range of designs that again look unthreatening to your waistline. Let me tell you reader, our crops were full to bursting after the fayre presented to us at Alfreton Hall.
When we glanced at our watches we were astonished to find that a couple of hours had passed - it honestly seemed as if we had only sat down a half hour previous. We were thoroughly enjoying the down time so we ordered another pot of tea and a pot of coffee
All too soon we had to return to the real world, but thanks to the wonderful experience from the Alfreton Hall team our batteries had been recharged.
If you haven’t been to Alfreton Hall before I can recommend you pay it a visit. The Traditional Tea Room is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am until 2.30pm. You do need to book, the telephone number is 01773 838200.
And remember to download your STICKY BEAK DISCOUNT VOUCHER which is valid until November and means you get afternoon tea for two people for the amazing price of £16. (see vouchers)
