I love surprises, especially from The Man Bird, and when they involve a) me not having to cook and b) going out to eat somewhere new, locally they’re even better. Burger Wurger is located on Heanor’s market place, and opened at the beginning of June 2024 – so it really is brand spanking new!
We parked the jalopy in the market place and because it was after 6pm, only paid £1.60; even though our stay wasn’t going to be overly long, we could’ve stayed the entire evening for that flat-fee. Burger Wurger very much has a relaxed cafe/bistro vibe going on, thanks to the calming colour palate of sage green and pale grey that decorate the walls. A mottled, dark grey carpet and modern chrome pendant lights above each dark table add to this effect, as do the recessed ceiling lights and the open-plan layout of the space. Simple prints break up the expanse of wall without creating ‘clutter’, making this a place that you want to stay in.
You can tell that Burger Wurger is a family-run business; the greeting we got was wonderfully warm and the lady showed us to our table with possibly the world’s broadest smile on her face. When we placed our drinks order at the counter (Malteaser Milkshake for me: £3.95, and a can of Diet Coke for His Nibs: 90p), she pointed out a couple of items that weren’t available on the Chicken Burger section; we weren’t planning on having these, so weren’t bothered. Whilst he was at the counter, His Nibs placed our food order, too.
I opted for the Stilton Burger, £6.95, and The Man chose the Pulled Pork option, £7.95. We added Chilli Cheesy bites (£4.20 for 8) and a portion of the loaded Chicken Fries (£4.95) to have with our burgers. All of the burgers are made onsite with Aberdeen Angus Beef Mince, and both this and the Chicken used is Halal.
Chef was already busy in the kitchen, fulfilling the deluge of online orders that were coming in as well as our check. As the evening wore on, a couple of walk-in customers had to be informed that there was a 1 hour wait on their food, if they were planning to order! Any new business is a steep learning curve, and I think Burger Wurger may have under-estimated just how popular a good Burger joint in the area will prove…you might want to plan an extension to your kitchen already!
Whilst we waited for our burgers, I was sipping steadily away on my classic Milkshake; the thick, malty liquid was delicious and I loved its presentation: tall, fluted glass that was internally decorated with Chocolate sauce, the shake topped with a layer of whipped Cream and scattered with Malteaser balls. This drink was really quite filling, so I slowed down; no point being full before I even clapped eyes on my burger, eh?!
The serving tray that came out to us was fully loaded with our quartet of choices; the burgers were housed in colourful cardboard cartons, the bites in a snug packet, and the loaded fries just about being confined by a deep chip-shop style tray. Both burgers were a good size and, I’m happy to report, tasted just as fab. I tell you what; price-wise these morsels are an absolute steal!!
My choice had a lovely twang of Stilton at its edge; definitely detectable, but not over-whelming. I always think that the balance of cheese is a difficult one to achieve because, too much and you get a greasy, oozy mess spilling from the bun, and too little, you can’t taste it. Chef absolutely nailed it. The Classic burger garnish of fresh, sweet Tomato and crisp, cool Lettuce was spot-on (as was the light toasting of the bun) and the texture of the Beef patty was that subliminally magic one of not loose, but not firm. A couple of Bacon rashers had been perfectly crisped and their salty tint added another layer to the flavours in my mouth, and those wicked crispy Onion bits added a great textural element to this minx. Over my lifetime I’ve eaten a fair few burgers - of all interpretations – and this was certainly one of the tastiest I’ve had. Granted, the presentation wasn’t anything fancy-pants, but for the brilliantly budget-friendly price I don’t think you can expect it to be and, let’s face it, your stomach doesn’t give a flying what-sit about looks; it’s the taste that counts!
His Nibs had originally fancied the ‘Works’ burger with its temptation of triple patties, but he is a sucker for succulent pulled Pork, so he went for this version instead. This was undeniably delicious and very moreish, but talk about tricky to negotiate! One thing that the smoky BBQ sauce-pimped shreds didn’t want to do was stay inside the bun’s confines when lifted up towards his greedy mush, so The Man did have to constantly wrestle with them. In the end, he admitted defeat and used his fork to scoop them up. Maybe Burger Wurger will tweak this offering to be a Beef Pattie that’s topped with Pulled Pork, for an easier to manage, double taste sensation; who knows?
Both of us fell head-over-heels for the crispy Cheesy Chilli Bites. An impossibly crunchy outer revealed a gooey mix of flavoursome melted Cheese and finely chopped green Chillies that certainly made their presence known on the palate! Cheese: tick; Chilli: tick; Crispy: tick; and bite-size: tick…these beauties have it all wrapped up. Now, I don’t know about you but, in the past, I’ve felt sorely underwhelmed when it comes to supposedly ‘loaded’ fries. All too frequently, what happens is that the fries are topped with a superficial layer of extra stuff, leaving the majority of the underneath fries naked…what a swizz, I reckon! Thankfully Burger Wurger haven’t fallen prey to this and ensure that the extra bits are all the way through their loaded fries – yay. Tasty fries were slathered with that atomic-toned Cheese sauce, loads of crispy Onion bits, shredded Chicken thigh meat and decorated with crunchy Spring Onions, making a super-tasty dish that would easily do as a main, too.
Check-backs were done at intervals whilst we were eating and when we said that we’d not got room for dessert, we were kindly offered a slice of Chocolate Brownie to bring home, compliments of Burger Wurger. How flipping kind was that? The Brownie, by the way, was beautifully gooey in the middle and richly chocolatey.
Hot Wings are unreservedly given to this Heanor Burger Joint! The only thorny issue I foresee is the wait-time for their scrummy food, because the orders are certainly going to keep rolling in!! Ring 01773 301376 to book a table to dine-in or to place your takeout. Burger Wurger is also on Foodhub and JustEat and delivery charges are: £2.50 up to 2 miles, £3 up to 3-miles and £4 over 3 miles. You can call them directly and pay cash as well, for which they will give you a 10% discount on your order.
