When I hear the name “Revolution” I automatically think of the flavoured vodka bars, I didn’t realise they had branched out into doing food until they invited the Man and me to go along and try out their menu. So we hopped off our perches and had a little fly down to Derby on a Monday evening to see what the fuss was about. The venue itself is very open plan with a very eye catching bar area complete with monochrome mosaic, although it was the two mirror balls that got my attention (you can take the girl out of the disco.....).
To kick things off I had a classic Mojito and The Man had a Long Island Iced Tea while we browsed the menu. We decided to have one of the Sharing Starters called the Street Food Crate; it had a plethora of yummy things in – 2 Pulled Beef Sliders, Viper Dusted Fat Chips, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Dough Dogs, BBQ Crackling Puffs and Hot Buffalo Sauce, Chipotle Sauce and Big Easy Mayo to dip into.
The beef was tender as you like and really had some flavour to it and the dough dogs were great. I was impressed by the fact that the sausage was a decent quality, not the rubbish that repeats on you for hours and hours. We really liked the Fried Chicken because it was breast meat and wasn’t greasy at all, and thought the Crackling Puffs were a brilliant idea. They were a bit like savoury popcorn - I could’ve cheerfully munched those all day long!
His Nibs had the Smokin’ Dog for his main course, which is a Bockwurst Sausage with Smoked Cheddar, Fire Pit Beans, BBQ Fried Onions, Smokinnaise and Fries. It was a proper belly buster, absolutely chocka. All the components were deemed to be really tasty, and he even had to leave some of the bun so he had room for pudding.
For my main course I had the Fizz Bomb Burger just purely because the idea of Popping Candy in a burger piqued my curiosity. This Beef Burger had Smoked Cheddar, Armageddon Sauce, Spicy Pork N’duja balls, Roquito Peppers, Popping Candy and Big Easy Mayo. I upgraded to Smokin’ Fries with Fire Pit Beans, Smokinnaise and BBQ Fried Onions, and they were very nice too. I just got a hint of cracking in my mouth rather than the full on explosion you get when you empty a full packet of Popping Candy into your mouth, which is good because I think that might have freaked me out a bit! The burger was very nice, really filling and the blend of flavours gave it just a nice amount of heat. I really liked the quality of the beef used in the burger; you can always tell when good cuts are used to make the patties.
I’m never one to pass up an opportunity for bragging rights if one comes along, and one landed nicely in my lap at Revolution – well technically it’s their bragging rights, but I’ll ride the wave of glory with them. Revolution in Derby are one of only four sites in their company to offer Frozen Vodkaccinos which I suppose you could compare to an alcoholic Slushie, but that really doesn’t do them justice. I had the Movie House Milkshake which is Salted Caramel and Melted Ice Cream flavour vodkas blended with Milk and Cream and topped with Popcorn.
Oh my days I thought I’d gone to birdie heaven, it was beyond gorgeous, I could drink those 24/7. They just taste so innocent and delicious but they do of course contain alcohol so remember to pace yourselves and drink responsibly guys. On the super plus side I convinced myself that they are healthy; well, Milk and Cream contain Calcium which is good for your bones right? So if you want to be ahead of the crowd in your clique get yourselves to Revolution Derby and try one of the many different flavours of Frozen Vodkaccinos they offer. If you go on a Monday they do a Mega Monday deal on all food all day, which is 50% off regular prices so you could treat yourself to an extra drink.
No meal for team Sticky would be complete without that all important pudding piece, so The Boy had a Chocolate Mess Sundae (Revolutions take on the classic Eton Mess) comprised of Chocolate Ice Cream, Meringue Pieces, Chocolate Brownie chunks, Cream and Chocolate sauce. He really liked how the pieces of Meringue were small as it allowed them to blend in with the Brownie chunks, and his verdict was that the whole dessert was very rich, smothered in Cream and perfect for Chocoholics.
My dessert was also Chocolate based which is quite a rarity for me as you know. Again, my curiosity got the better of me when I saw the Chocolate Fluffwich, a concoction of soft Dough, Nutella Chocolate, Marshmallow fluff, sweet batter and Blueberry dip. Having tasted it I think it’s a cracking idea, really tasty and a great balance of the Nutella and marshmallow. The Batter wasn’t greasy at all and the Blueberry dip cut through the sweetness perfectly with its fruity tang. I managed to convince myself that the Blueberry would count as one of my 5-a-day so I felt absolutely no guilt whatsoever as I devoured every last crumb of the Fluffwich.
Obviously the fact that we thoroughly enjoyed the food isn’t in any doubt but I would like to mention a few things that I really liked about Revolution Derby: our server (Jade) asked if we would like table water when we first sat down, the napkins are nice and thick so they’re not going to disintegrate as soon as you need them and the managers are very much in evidence on the floor pitching in with their team.
Throughout the evening there was a laidback selection of music to add to the relaxed ambience of the premises, and it had a great buzz to it for a Monday evening. Everyone looked to be having a great time, chatting, laughing, drinking and eating with friends. No one was rushed or hurried, and indeed we spent nearly 2 ½ hours there ourselves. Stuart, the General Manager and Kurt (Assistant Manager) both came over to introduce themselves and have a chat, and Stuart went down the tables to talk to all of the customers which I thought was a great touch. All the staff were efficient and friendly, nothing was too much trouble and our server Jade was an absolute sweetheart.
So don’t do as I did and think of Revolution solely as a drinking venue, it has so much more to offer. Next time you’re in Derby shopping, or even if you’re at a loose end midweek and stuck for something to do, pop into Revolution and soak up the atmosphere and sample their wares. “Hot Wings“ ahoy for Stuart and his talented team.
