Afternoon Tea At The Makeney Hall Hotel, Milford
Last week was National Afternoon Tea Week dear reader, a fact that I must admit to not knowing. However, it did coincide rather nicely with the fact that I had booked myself, The Boy Wonder and my Mummy Bird in for Afternoon Tea at The Makeney Hall Hotel as a pre-birthday treat for my Mummy.
So we arrived at the Hotel (which is a very elegant old stone building once belonging to Mr George Herbert Strutt), and were greeted with a lovely cheery smile and given directions to the Conservatory where our tea would be served. The Conservatory has wonderful views of the gardens and has a lovely relaxed yet refined ambience to it. Our table was beautifully set out with nice linens and cutlery, and it wasn’t long before a pot of tea was placed before us along with a very generously proportioned plate laden with a selection of sandwiches. There were Egg and Cress, Tuna Mayonnaise, Cheese and Chutney and Ham and Mustard sandwiches to choose from, all with crusts cut off, some were triangular and some were finger shaped. They were symmetrically arranged with Rocket, Tomato and Cucumber garnish artfully placed among them. Needless to say, we all enjoyed every beakful that we had.
We refreshed our cups of tea in readiness for the cakes arrival, and they were soon placed on the table before us. Mummy Birds little eyes lit up at the tempting morsels on offer; Fresh Cream Meringue Nests with Raspberries, Lemon Possets in individual Glasses (again with a fresh Raspberry on top), Chocolate Cake and Fruit Scones with dishes of Clotted Cream and Strawberry Conserve. Unfortunately mummy Bird and I aren’t very good with Meringue, so the Boy Wonder gallantly offered to demolish all 3 of those for us. I know, reader, wasn’t that a tough job for him? The Lemon Posset was exactly the right balance of Citrus Tang and Pillowy Creaminess, and the Chocolate Cake was deliciously moist and rich - perfectly naughty for an indulgent treat. The Scones had a wonderful texture and a good amount of fruit in them too.
By this point in the proceedings our little crops were full to the brim and we were chattering in delight, and Mummy Bird in particular was enjoying herself. Then the Prosecco came out, so we had a little toast to her Health, and wished her Happy Birthday.
The staff were all exceptionally polite and extremely smart in their blackand white uniforms and their attention to us ensured that we had a top-notch afternoon. I highly recommend you come and try afternoon tea at The Makeney Hall Hotel; you will have a great time in fantastic surroundings.
