Breakfast At Huntley Green in Cromford
Published On Wednesday 16 Mar 2016 by Sticky Beak
This venue is now closed I have recently been unwell so The Man Bird decided I needed feeding up and took me somewhere new for breakfast; Huntley Green in the Market Place at Cromford. It’s a lovely open space that has a warm welcoming feel to it where you can read the papers at a leisurely pace and indulge in a full breakfast or just a coffee and cake if that is your preference. Huntley Green is run by a brother and sister team who are very much hands on, and they are more than ably assisted by the lovely Poppy. As for my own poached eggs and mushrooms, they were absolutely delicious. I think that when you’ve been poorly, comfort food tastes like ambrosia doesn’t it? Hot Wings definitely deserved from this tight-knit team, not only for the food but also for the standard of customer care. If you find yourselves in Cromford dear reader, you most definitely need to sample the wares at Huntley Green, whatever time of day it is.
His Nibs was predictable in his choice of Full English breakfast but I decided to have Poached Eggs with Mushrooms on thick Multigrain toast, and we both had tea to accompany the food. All the food is cooked fresh to order so there were great pillows of steam coming from our plates and every morsel was bursting with flavour.
The Boy Wonder was smitten with the lovely sweet, smoky tasting slices of Bacon and he really liked the thick sausage too; he said that it’s how a breakfast sausage should be, a proper hearty affair. His eggs were full of taste and you get good sized portions of beans, tomato, mushrooms and Black Pud too. It was the Potato slices that grabbed his attention though; you don’t get just 3 or 4 of them, there must’ve been at least 8 or 9 good thick slices on his plate.
After demolishing the plateful he leaned back in his chair with a contented little chirrup and a huge grin on his chops, so top marks to the Huntley Green team.
On this occasion it was most definitely the case that this humble breakfast combination achieved god-like status in my eyes. The Mushrooms were plentiful and they were bursting with flavour and not at all greasy, and the eggs couldn’t have had any more taste to them if they’d tried. Both delights sat atop a huge doorstep of toasted multigrain bread that was marvellous in its own right, and I savoured every single morsel as if it was my last supper.
Sometimes food not only manages to nourish the body, but the soul too, and on that particular Saturday morning Huntley Greens team gave me just the perk up I needed.
There was an initial rush as they opened at 9a.m, then a little lull before walkers and friends met up for coffee and cakes between 10.30-11a.m. Every single person was greeted with a wide smile from Poppy, and as you left you were wished well and thanked equally enthusiastically. We indulged in the most decadent looking slice of Millionaires Shortcake for The Chick and a jar of Homemade Chilli Jam for us.
The Shortcake was given a top rating from my Chickadee; she loved the crumbly rich shortcake and said that both the Caramel and Chocolate layers were nice and deep. We had a little bit of the Chilli Jam with some cold meats for supper the following night, and it has a lovely sweetness and heat to it that really caresses your tongue without burning.
