Moss Valley Fine Meats of Sheffield

Well dear reader, there was a lovely surprise delivered to our nest last weekend, and the weather was such that a BBQ just had to be done. The team at Moss Valley Fine Meats contacted us to ask if they could send us some of their produce to sample seeing as I had enjoyed their belly pork so much (they supply The Devonshire Arms at Beeley). Of course it was a no-brainer to accept their kind offer and so we waited with keen anticipation to see what would arrive.

The driver delivered a cool box packed with 4 different varieties of sausage, some Pork and Apple burgers , a rack of BBQ spare ribs and a pack of Sweet cured Back Bacon, so The Man made a quick phone call to the Tribal Elders to invite them over for a flock get together. Those senior birds can still flap their wings mightily quick when there’s food involved and it wasn’t long before they arrived Chez Beak!

All the sausages were very meaty, not packed with filler ingredients like cheaper offerings and they didn’t ooze a great deal of fat either (so the meat in them must be a decent quality too). The Pork and Apple sausage was lovely with just a subtle, slightly sweet taste to it - my Chick really liked this one, and I have to say that there were mutterings of appreciation from us all. We tried the Pork and Tomato sausage next. I always like to see this variety just because of the lovely colour to it, and this fella didn’t disappoint with either looks or taste; it had a great fresh tang of tomato to it and was really pleasing on the palate.

The next variety had me a little nervous I must confess; the Cumberland sausage can be great or just an imitation of the Lincolnshire Sausage (which I personally don’t like). Fortunately Moss Valleys interpretation of the Cumberland isn’t too spicy and is actually quite tasty in my opinion - in fact the rest of the flock thoroughly enjoyed it, especially my Daddy Bird. The final sausage to be sampled was the Cracked Black Pepper variety, and this was The Boy Wonders favourite. It has a great warm peppery flavour to it that is clean and fresh to taste without being too overpowering, and we all liked it. So top marks for the Sausages.... could the rest of the produce be equally good?

Well, yes, is the short answer. The Pork and Apple burgers were a fantastic size, and held their texture well. They weren’t fatty at all and were perfectly seasoned, and we all declared them to be very tasty.

Now, no BBQ is complete in my eyes without some Pork ribs and the Moss Valley spare ribs are fantastic. For a start there was plenty of sauce on them which had that perfect balance of sweet and tang to it and a great stickiness once it was cooked, so that you have to lick your fingers afterwards (one of the pleasures of BBQ food). Secondly, each rib was separate, with meat on both sides of the bone meaning that you got plenty of meat to eat rather than a piffly bit that you hardly taste.

The ribs had that same satisfying dense texture to them that I remembered from the Belly Pork, and we all remarked what a lovely flavour the ribs had to them.

Now obviously Bacon isn’t best showcased on the BBQ, so I made the executive decision that Sunday Breakfast would consist of Bacon Butties.  I have to say that it was absolutely delish dear reader, nice thick slices of sweet meaty yumminess. In fact it’s so good that it has just been shortlisted by the Buy British Food Farm Produce awards 2015 competition. Team Sticky Beak will be rooting for you to win your category guys, and if you need any character references for the judges.... ;)

So Thank you Moss Valley Fine Meats, we had a fantastic family BBQ courtesy of the high quality of your Sausages, Burgers and Spare Ribs, and a great Lazy Sunday Breakfast. I think it fair to say you’ve earned your “Hot Wings“ from Team Sticky Beak
