Preview Night Of The New Look At The Greyhound, Cromford

We were very kindly invited to go along to the re-opening of The Greyhound at Cromford, following its refurbishment at the hands of new owner Paul. Paul and his team took over ownership of the pub in November 2016 and quickly set about converting their vision into reality. Aside from electricians, plumbers and professional floor fitters, all the work has been done in-house and you can feel the love and care in every corner of the premises.

Personally, I loved the relaxed, traditional feel of the “Arkwright” room with its leather Chesterfield sofas, spinning wheel in the window and of course the hand painted mural of Mr Richard Arkwright on the wall done by a local artist. I couldn’t help but notice the copper bed warmer at the side of the bar either, having still got my Granny’s that she used to use on my bed with embers from the fire.

A lot of the original wood beams have been exposed and you can’t help but admire the regal proportions of the stone fireplace down one end of the main bar area. The colour palate for the premises is light and neutral which really allows light to be maximised and also for accent colours to be used on the fabric blinds.

The staff members were all very friendly and polite and before long the bubbly was flowing and mini dishes from the menu were being sampled with much appreciation. I had a Smoked Haddock and Quails egg ball, and jolly nice it was too; it was just nicely warm and the sweet fish had been beautifully seasoned. The quail egg was softly boiled so that its yolk was runny, releasing its richness onto the tongue slowly to be savoured.

His Nibs had spied a young lady bearing a platter of Fish and Chips, and was soon tucking into these delicious morsels; commenting on how crisp the batter on the fish was. Shortly afterwards the mini beef burgers were doing the rounds and neither of us could resist these superb looking beauties. The beef patty was excellent in flavour and was topped with a gooey layer of cheese, a slice of tomato and lettuce leaf; the brioche roll had been lightly toasted, something that I personally think sets a burger off supremely well.

The local village butcher had supplied the next temptation that we gave in to; the humble sausage with its accompanying honey and mustard glaze. As you know, I am somewhat picky when it comes to bangers but this one was gently seasoned in the Lincolnshire sausage vein (although not quite so robustly thank goodness). By now the staff had realised that glutton club was in attendance and came over with Mushroom Vol-au-Vents for His Nibs and I to try!  They were beautifully flaky, nicely warm and filled generously with a fine Mushroom Duxelle; just the finale you would wish for.

Chef Gary Auld certainly is feeling settled in at The Greyhound and this comfort translates in the quality of the dishes coming from his kitchen.  Good food always needs a good wine to go with it and Paul is well experienced within the wine trade having worked for wine companies for many years. He has travelled the four corners of the earth sourcing great wines, so he knows his grapes that is for sure. At The Greyhound in Cromford there is a very impressive selection to choose from; 70 to be precise!

Paul is hoping to have the first five bedrooms finished for the weekend (they hadn’t been made up so we weren’t allowed a sneak peek quite yet!) and a further five sometime over the summer. Given the standard of the food we sampled tonight, if the rooms are as good then it will be a very popular place to stay.

Thank you for inviting us along to share your special night with you, we had a great time and wish you every success team Greyhound on your first official opening night, Friday 10th February 2017 :)
