Another Great Blueys Comedy Night In Alfreton

On Tuesday the 25th November, Blueys in Alfreton held it's Bi-Monthly Comedy Night and once again it was a great success, have a read of what our reviewer thought.

Those fun-lovin’ frolickers at Blueys hosted another of their bi-monthly comedy nights last week, and it was a laughter-packed evening as usual dear reader. The Boy Wonder and myself flew over for about 7pm so that we could have one of their yum-tastic  “Bluey Burgers“ before the  Comedy  Acts kicked off at 8pm.

The evening followed its usual formula of one act, short drink break, 3 acts, and short break again and then the final headline act. What I really like about these evenings is that there is always something for everybody, whether you like slapstick or dead-pan comedy. I think it’s great too that up-and-coming talent is allowed to shine and to practice various routines to find out what works and what doesn’t in a less intimidating atmosphere than large faceless venues.

The MC for the evening was a chap by the name of Joe Bromehead, a really sharp tack character. He had the gift of being able to quickly gauge the crowds humour and find out what made them tick. The banter put everyone in a great frame of mind for the evening ahead, and got us warmed up for the comedians.

First up was a Brummie guy called Freddie Farrell. He had a really slick routine that went down well with the Blueys crowd, nothing complicated and plenty of interaction from the audience.

He was followed by the first of the “middle slot acts“, a fella called Wayne Beese from Dudley whose act was deadpan style. After such a raucous start it took us all a couple of minutes to get in the groove of his routine, but after a slow start he really warmed up in the last few minutes to end well.

Third act of the evening was a surprise for Bluey as it had been his birthday the day before. Some of you may recognise the name Austin Purcell from the TV show “ Father Ted “, nowadays the hair is a bit longer and wilder but the sharp eyes and humour are still strongly evident. He was in character as your stereotypical eccentric Irish Priest, so it was a fast-paced, higgledy-piggledy, hilarity-packed slot as you can imagine. The crowd lapped it up.

The third and final act of the “middlers“ was completely not what you would imagine at all – a Female guitar playing comedian by the name of Hannah Silvester. She was an off-beat character, who in my opinion has a lot of potential to really develop her material and carve a niche for herself on the comedy circuit. The guitar playing segment of her act reminded me of Victoria Woods musical comedy style, which was highly entertaining in its day. Again, she seemed to appeal to the audience at Blueys.

At this point in the proceedings there was another short break to allow people to use the lavatory and/or refill their drinks at the bar.

The final headline act of the evening was a man called Gareth Berliner who has appeared in Coronation Street no less, as a character called Macca. His sharp Brummie wit permeated all aspects of his comedy routine with shrewd social commentary forming the backbone of his act. It was fast paced and punchy, lots of banter between him and the audience and it ended the night on a real high note.

I still can’t believe Amber Valleys luck in having such a diverse comedy night where the tickets are only a fiver! Next year the Comedy Nights are set to continue, so make sure you get your tickets and grab a few mates for a meal early doors to make a real night of it at a pocket friendly price.

Headline Acts and Dates for Flamin’ Galah Comedy nights in 2015 are :

Patrick Monahan, January 27th. Blueys will be the pre-tour gig for Patrick, so with tickets limited to 50, make sure you don’t miss out.

John Robertson, March 31st.

Mickey D, May 26th.

Ivan Brackenbury, July 28th.

Jollyboat, September 29th.
