There’s one thing you can’t beat as a tourist; the inside scoop. Chef Johnny Hernandez, the brains behind MEXIco restaurant in Derby’s Intu Centre, very kindly gave us some recommendations for dining in Washington D.C and NYC when he heard about our upcoming family holiday. Johnny knows that I love food that is produced with flair and passion, uses local produce where possible, and is chock-full of taste.
Black Barn American restaurant is his recommendation for New York that caught my eye. I loved the background story of this venue; two childhood friends reconnected after 30 years and after meeting up with another friend (designer Mark Zeff) at his Hamptons’ Black Barn home ,decided to open Black Barn restaurant.
This acclaimed restaurant offers seasonal, rustic dishes within a contemporary farmhouse atmosphere, just across from the breath-taking Madison Square Park, and not far from 11 Madison Park (recently named the World’s Top Restaurant). The Main restaurant serves breakfast 7.30am-10.30am Monday-Friday, lunch 11.30am-2.30pm Monday-Friday, and dinner 5.30pm-10pm Monday and 5.30pm-11pm Tuesday-Saturday, with brunch served Saturdays 11.30-3pm , and Sundays 11.30am-4pm.
The Black Barn Tavern serves dinner from 2.30pm-10pm on Mondays, and 2.30pm-11pm Tuesday-Saturday.
We haven’t quite decided whether to go the restaurant or tavern yet as we’re still figuring out our final itineraries for each day so it will depend on the times we get to each attraction. There are a couple of things that have caught my beady little eye though, one being the Tavern’s Happy hour deals; Monday-Saturday 4-6pm and 9-11pm you can get oysters and wings for one dollar each as well as saving 50% on Margarita Pizza, Mushroom Toast, Meatballs, and the Black Barn Burger.
As you may know if you read my blog, my favourite meat in the world is Rabbit and one of the seasonal dishes on the Black Barn Restaurant currently is Roasted and Braised Rabbit served with soft Polenta, Fava Beans, Ramps, and grilled Romaine. Get me there now!! Unfortunately, due to the Alcohol Laws in America, we won’t be able to indulge in the amazing-sounding five course tasting menu with wine pairings, as The Chick is well under 21!
We did a Chefs Table event at The Cavendish Hotel on the Chatsworth Estate with Chef Alan Hill and they are incredible; chefs’ really can showcase their flair and talent on these occasions. The Black Barn team create new menus monthly for this experience, using uber-fresh ingredients at the peak of their harvest and cook dishes that bring them to life in the mouth. If you find yourself in NYC it is well worth going and seeing what this experience is all about.
