#DareToDine At Showcase Cinema @IntuDerby

I love my job so much sometimes dear reader. It has led me to some amazing experiences that I otherwise wouldn’t have gone to and Dare2Dine is one such event. When the invite came through I have to say I was very, very intrigued and handed the email to His Nibs to get his take on it; he was equally bamboozled let me tell you. This is what it said: “Join us for a unique sensory cinema experience, as a cult classic springs to life before your very eyes. There’ll be lots of surprises and we promise you and your guest will love it, but we can’t say more than that!” Now, I defy anyone not to have their curiosity antennae twitching after reading that.

So off we tootled to the Showcase Cinema de Lux absolutely buzzing with anticipation. In the Directors lounge,  glasses of Champagne were awaiting us as well as some seasoned nuts from Nandos and some of Pizza Express’ mouth-watering dough balls with garlic butter (which my little chick is completely in love with). As we sat down to nibble there was chance to take part in a quiz and win a DVD of the film we were going to watch - Pulp Fiction.

As we walked into the auditorium there was a rock n roll trio called The Delray Rockets playing some of the films soundtrack songs to set the mood.

Now, it’s been quite a while since The Boy Wonder and I have watched Pulp Fiction and we really enjoyed it; you forget just how many iconic scenes there are in the film – not least Mr Winston Wolf who has been recently resurrected in a series of adverts on T.V. There are loads of food references too, not just the Jack Rabbit Slim eatery that hosts the legendary dance scene.

Vincent and Jules are discussing the differences between Europe and America in terms of cuisine, one of which is how Europeans put Mayonnaise on their “fries” instead of Ketchup - cue a raft of servers presenting us with individual bowls of skin-on fries and little pots of Mayo courtesy of Joes Kitchen washed down with a bottle of Peroni lager from Zizzi.

There is also the memorable scene where some college kids have tried to swindle Marcellus Wallace and are paid a breakfast visit by Jules and Vince.  Jules avails himself of a bite from a “Kahuna” burger and as if by magic the cinema team placed juicy burgers before us thanks to the Studio One kitchen team. It was superb I have to say; a really juicy flavoursome burger.

A Tropical juice from Wagamama and their delicious Teriyaki Steak Soba followed soon after, taking my taste buds into sensory overload. There was a brief interval so we made our way back into the Directors lounge for a cheeky glass of “The Brave” -  Famous Grouse, pressed apple juice, fresh ginger juice and Fentimans ginger juice from the Mixologists at Joes Kitchen.

Once again The Delray Rockets were strutting, and strumming, their stuff as we went back into the auditorium .They cranked the energy levels up to get us back into our Pulp Fiction groove and channelling our inner Mias and Vincents.

When Vincent and Mia are at Jack Rabbit Slims Mia orders a $5 shake, which Vince has to taste to check it’s worth the money, and bang on cue we were served our own Ben and Jerry’s Vanilla Milkshake from the Showcase Cinema de Lux team. It was velvety liquid heaven in a glass dear reader.

A delicious miniature pancake with berry compote from Joes Kitchen resonated perfectly with the scene where Butch’s girlfriend Fabianne is saying how she wants a huge stack of blueberry pancakes for breakfast. The finale, food –wise, was a taste bud tantalising Tiramisu from the Zizzi team and man-o-man was it good :)

As if that wasn’t enough, the Showcase Cinema team sent us back to the nest with a framed print of Pulp Fiction facts, a Halloween Doughnut from Krispy Kreme doughnuts (my all-time fave doughnuts) and a pack of four Pulp Fiction decorated cupcakes.

The whole evening from start to finish was an absolute blast, thank you so much for inviting us.

Obviously the Dare2Dine event was a one off (for now) but if you ever find yourselves at the Showcase Cinema de Lux it would be well worth pushing the boat out and treating yourself to the Directors Lounge experience ;  the bar area is gorgeous and comfy and the sofa style seating  in the cinema reclines and is very spacious. If you go as a couple there is room to curl up and snuggle into your loved one too - bonus!
